Free Pattern: Baby Girl's Blanket

Bobble and Chain Baby Blanket

(with matching hat)

This blanket is sure to become a family heirloom. With bumps, holes, ridges and an optional ruffle, it's texture will amuse and encourage baby's developing brain. The entire pattern is done in single crochet.
The finished dimensions are 34" x 34". If using one-pound skeins, enough will be left over to make the matching hat.




Skill level:
Easy/Intermediate 




Materials:
size I/9 5.50MM crochet hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)
Worsted weight (4) acrylic yarn:
Caron One Pound - 1 skein soft pink (color A)
Caron One Pound - 1 skein lilac (color B)
Tapestry needle or smaller hook for weaving in ends

Gauge:
4" x 4" = 10 rows, 4 bobbles or
2" x 2" = 7 rows, 9 sts of "rib" stitch in color B
















Stitches:
Chain st (ch),
Slip st (sl st),
Single crochet (sc),
Single crochet bobble (sc bobble): Insert hook, pull up 1 loop in each of next 5 sts (6 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through all 6 loops.
*optional* Foundation single crochet (fsc): Chain 2. Insert hook into stitch farthest from hook, pull up 1 loop. Yarn over,pull through 1 loop. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops. For the next stitch, insert the hook in the third loop from hook.

Starting with color A: Make 129 fsc *

  *or, chain 130, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, work 128 sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Pattern:

Row 1:
1 sc in first st. *Single crochet bobble starting in next st, ch 4.* repeat from * to * 24 times, sc in last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2:

1 sc in first st. 5 sc in each ch-4 sp, 1 sc in last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3-4:

Repeat rows 1 & 2


Row 5-6:

Repeat rows 1 & 2.

Row 7-8:

Repeat rows 1 & 2.

Row 9:

Repeat row 1.

Row 10:
1 sc in first st. 5 sc in each ch-4 sp,; stop for the last step of the last st to change colors. Pull color B through last 2 loops. Ch 1, turn.

Row 11:

1 sc in first st, ch 1. *Sk 1 st, sc in back loop of next st, ch 1.* Repeat from * to * 61 more times. Sk 1 st, 1 sc in each of last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn.

Row 12:

1 sc in first st. *1 sc in back loop of next st. ch 1, sk 1 st.* Repeat from * to * 61 more times. 1 sc in back loop of next st, 1 sc in each of last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn.

Row 13-14:
Repeat rows 11 & 12.

Row 15-16:

Repeat rows 11 & 12.

Row 17:

Repeat row 11. 

Row 18:

1 sc in first st, ch 1. *Sk 1 st, sc in back loop of next st, ch 1.* Repeat from * to * 61 more times. stop for the last step of the last st to change colors. Pull color A through last 2 loops. Ch 1, turn.

Row 19:
1 sc in first st. *In back loops only; Single crochet bobble starting in next st, ch 4.* repeat from * to * 24 times, sc in last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn.

Row 20:
Repeat row 2.

Row 21-74:
Repeat rows 1 through 20.

Row  75-82:
Repeat rows 1 & 2. Bind off, weave in ends.

Border:
*Note* If you will not be working the optional ruffle, it may be necessary to work the border with a smaller (size H) hook to avoid a wrinkle. Otherwise, work border in same size hook as pattern unless your gauge doesn't match.
With wrong side facing, join color B with a sl st. Make 2 rows (rounds) of color B, 2 rows of color A, 2 rows of color B, 2 rows of color A in the following pattern: Beginning with ch 1 (counts as sc),   1 sc in each st around, making ( 1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc) in corner sps and joining to ch-1 with a sl st.
If not working ruffle edge, bind off, weave in ends.


Ruffle:
*optional*
For ruffle edge, join color B along with color A in last sl st.

Ch 3 (counts as 1 sc, ch 2). 1 sc, ch 2 in each st around. Join with a sl st to beg ch-1. Bind off, weave in ends.
