Making the Dancing Dragonflies Scarf: Part Four

Round 5

Thanks for joining in on Part Four of the Dancing Dragonflies Scarf! (Click here for written pattern) As I stated in the previous tutorials, I'm sorry if this gets confusing: Part Four of the tutorial series covers Round Five, which is actually Row Four of the Dragonfly pattern stitch. Again as before, maybe you should just disregard my confusing explanation and follow along from here... In this part of the series, we will create the dragonflies!

Stitches used in this tutorial:
Single crochet two together (sc2tog) - You'll get step by step instructions for this stitch here in the tutorial!

New to the project?

Just missed the last one?

Let's get started!

1.
To begin Round 5, slip stitch into the corner ch-3 space. Chain 7. This counts as the beginning double crochet and the corner ch-4 space. Make 1 dc in the same space to complete the beginning corner. Make 1 double crochet in each of the next 3 dc's before beginning the next set of multiples.

2.
This is where we will begin to create the dragonflies! To begin the next multiple, you will chain 5. This will make the final part of the first "wing" before we create the "body" and the "tail" of the dragonfly.

3.
Insert the hook from front to back in the loop of the first "eye" from Round 2. Push your hook up to the same height as the top chain of the pattern: You will need to pull up a long loop in the next step!

4.
Yarn over and pull a loop through. Pull this loop up to the height of Round 4. (For beginners: This is called making a long loop. You may find this method in more advanced stitches such as the Spike Stitch and the Love Knot.)

5.
Now, we're going to pull up a second long loop in the loop of the next "eye", just like you did for the first one. Beginners: You may find it difficult to perform this step without pulling the first long loop tight. Make sure you push your hook all the way up to the top of Round 4, and let the tension of your working yarn fall loose until you pull the loop up to height.

6.
After you pull up the second long loop, you will have three loops on your hook. We will complete the sc2tog stitch in the next step.

7.
Yarn over, and pull through all three loops on the hook. You've just completed the single crochet two together (sc2tog)! Technically, I guess it really a long sc3tog... But don't let that confuse you.

8.
Speaking of confusing you... Don't follow this step; just read, okay? No, this picture isn't upside down, but my work is! In the next steps, we will create the "tail" of the dragonfly. After you complete the tail, you will need to slip stitch in the back of the sc2tog post. Here, I've inserted the hook into these loops so you can see it before we make the tail. Later, you're going to have to swing the hook behind the tail to find it, so mark it now, if you need to. Make sure you pick up both of the long loops behind the tail.

9.
Here's where we will begin to make the "tail"! Chain 4. In the next steps, we will be working back into these chain stitches.

10.
In the chain-4 just made, locate the second chain away from the hook. Do not count the loop on the hook when counting the chains.

11.
Insert the hook in the second chain from the hook. Make sure to insert the hook under both loops of the stitch. Yarn over, pull through for a slip stitch in this chain.

12.
Slip stitch in the next chain, and slip stitch in the next stitch (which is the top of the sc2tog). You will make a total of 3 slip stitches to create the "tail".

13.
Here's where we make that tricky stitch! Swing your hook up on the right side of the tail (left side for lefties). Make sure you don't catch your working yarn: Nothing should be in the way of the hook as you move it behind these stitches.

14.
You may find it helpful to pull the tail out of the way in this step. Insert the hook under both of the back post loops of the sc2tog stitch.

15.
To yarn over, bring the yarn under the hook, then up and over. The working yarn should come from the working side of the tail: Make sure the working yarn isn't wrapped around the tail.

16.
Pull through all the loops on the hook for a slip stitch. This will "anchor" the tail to the "body" of the dragonfly. That wasn't so hard, was it?

17.
Chain 5, make a double crochet in the next available double crochet stitch to create the second "wing" of the dragonfly and complete the multiple.

18.
Repeat steps 2 through 17 to complete the remaining multiples (19 more, as the pattern is written). There was a lot of steps there! Think we can speed up a little for the next steps?

19.
Make 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 dc's before the corner space. Make (1 dc, ch 4, 1 dc) in the corner ch-3 space. This will create the second corner of Round 5. You should have 4 dc's before the corner ch-4 space.

20.
After making the second corner space, make 1 double crochet in each of the next 4 dc's across the side. Because of the last dc made in the corner, you will see 5 dc's after the corner ch-4 space.

21.
Again, let's speed up a bit: Make (1 double crochet, ch 5, 1 double crochet) in the middle ch-4 space. Make 1 double crochet in each of the next 4 dc's. Now, because of the dc made in the middle chain-space, you will have 6 dc's after the second corner space. Because we haven't made the next corner yet, you will only have 5 dc's after the middle chain-space.

22.
To make the third corner: Make (1 double crochet, ch 4, 1 double crochet) in the corner ch-3 space. Make 1 double crochet in each of the next 3 dc's. You will now have 6 dc's before the third corner-space, and 4 dc's after the corner-space.

23.
To continue with the next set of multiples, refer to steps 2 through 17 for help.
*Ch 5, pull up long loop in the loops of each of the next 2 "eyes". Sc2tog. Ch 4, sl st in each of the next 3 stitches, beginning in the 2nd ch from hook. Sl st in the back post of the sc2tog stitch. Chain 5, dc in the next dc.* Repeat from * to * 20 times total (as the pattern is written).

24.
To work up to the fourth corner space: Make 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 dc. Including the ending dc of the last multiple, you will have 3 dc's before making the fourth corner space.
To make the fourth corner space: Make (1 double crochet, ch 4, 1 double crochet) in the corner ch-3 space. You will now have 4 dc's before the corner space.

25.
Make 1 double crochet in each of the next 4 dc's after making the corner. You will now have 5 dc's after the corner ch-4 space.

26.
Make (1 double crochet, ch 5, 1 double crochet) in the middle ch-4 space. You will now have 6 dc's after the fourth corner ch-4 space.
Make 1 double crochet in each of the next 4 dc's. You will now have 5 dc's after the middle ch-5 space.

27.
Join with a slip stitch to the third chain of the beginning ch-7 to complete the round. You will now have 6 dc's before the beginning corner ch-4 space.

28.
And here's where you get to bind off and weave in your ends! This has been a longer tutorial than the rest, so if you need help with weaving in your ends, please see this post from my Big Granny Square Blanket. It will show you what you need to know!

Happy Crocheting!
